Understand merchant payment statuses

Know when to fulfil, wait or ask the customer to retry.

Last updated 23 August 2026

Payment status determines whether an order is ready for fulfilment. The merchant view—not a debit alert or screenshot—is the source to follow.

Steps for Understand merchant payment statuses

  1. Step 1: Paid or successful: verify the expected amount and proceed through your fulfilment checks.
  2. Step 2: Pending: wait for a final provider result and avoid duplicate fulfilment.
  3. Step 3: Failed or cancelled: do not fulfil as paid; give the customer the current link if they want to retry.
  4. Step 4: Unexpected status: record the reference, amount and time and contact official support without sensitive payment credentials.

Confirm Understand merchant payment statuses

Refresh the order before acting when the customer says their bank has debited them.

Important: Do not manually mark a provider payment successful unless an authorised reconciliation process supports it.

If Understand merchant payment statuses still is not working

Take note of the business name, page, time and any non-sensitive reference or safe error message. Contact Selstack support without sending passwords, one-time codes, BVN, full bank details or card information.
